Inquiry Description
During the VBUC installation, the process stops with error message 2869.
Troubleshooting/solution
This error is a generic installation error, to obtain the full error message please follow the troubleshooting described on this blog post: Error 2869 when trying to install the Visual Basic Upgrade Companion. The ORCA tools used for troubleshooting can be downloaded from Aaron Stebner’s WebLog. The link in the blog post is out of date, but you can still download the individual package from his SkyDrive page), as detailed in this post.

After this troubleshooting is performed the VBUC installer will display the detailed error message.
The most common causes of this error are missing software requirements:
1. Visual Studio 2005/2008 (express editions are not supported)
2. .NET Framework 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK). This can be installed alongside Visual Studio 2005 by selecting the “.NET Framework SDK->Tools” option during installation and must be installed separately for Visual Studio 2008 for either x86 or x64, depending on your operating system.
